how do i recover a password for eternal lands

What you need to do is PM Entropy, Learner, Mihaim or Wytter on the EL forums:

In your message, explain the situation, quoting what you think the previous password was.

The more you can tell the developer (normally Entropy) about your character, the better a chance you have of getting it back.
